SUKU
This Spring/Summer 21 womenswear collection is inspired by my hometown’s heritage which is Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. SUKU in Indonesia means a certain ethnic or group of people. In this collection, I combine the uniqueness of some ethnics in the place where I was born to make it my own kind of ethnic. This collection will mainly focus on the “Peranakan” that is familiar to me as a Chinese living in Indonesia. Peranakan ethnic is a group of immigrants that came from China to Indonesia to make a living and have an impact on Indonesia’s culture and heritage.
Tjong A Fie mansion in Medan, Indonesia is one of the first and original inspirations of the collection. It is an old house of Chinese immigrant (Tjong A Fie) who travel to North Sumatra, making a significant impact on developing Medan City. He was also well-known as a humble and non-racist guy. This colour palette for his collection is inspired by his mansion, as a dedication for a person who played an important role in my birthplace.
I use “Batak” and “Minang” as my inspiration for silhouette, combining the idea of loose-fitting structure but asymmetrical and for detailing pair will be a corporation with Batak traditional weaving pattern. In addition to toned up the collection, colour blocking s used throughout the line-up that inspired from Bauhaus. The fabrication for the collection are linen and cotton influenced by Japanese designer Issey Miyake.
“SUKU” is a collection that tells myself. Who lived in various ethnicity country and proud to announce myself as an Indonesian, even though I am not originally local ethnic in Indonesia. A collection that shows my love for Indonesia with Chinese culture and heritage in the world where I grew up
