identity conquers conflict

This AW/21 collection demonstrates how a culture has fought back for their independence and used fashion as a message which represents strength and courage. The Herero tribe was captured and colonised by the German military in 1884, they fought back wearing the German uniform as they believed the power would then transfer upon them. Once liberated, the Herero men continued to dress like their German oppressors while the Herero women dressed like the airs and graces of the Christian missionary ladies who came in 1890. Today, the tribe are thriving, they collectively demonstrate their newly gained freedom through fashion whilst paying homage to their ancestors.

The Herero men have restyled the German military jacket and made it their own, whilst the Herero women have taken their dresses and patched them together creating a unique look. The way in which they have made something completely new from what once portrayed a different message inspired me to do the same.

This collection takes colour inspiration from Richard moss and his shocking pink exhibition where he captured Congo in a whole new light, he famously quotes, ‘if you make something beautiful people will stop and listen’. This quote has inspired my collection as there is a lot of meaning behind it. The vibrant colour palette brings this collection to life and allows it to speak for itself. This is a military collection so this will be prominent throughout each look. The styling of this collection will bring an edgy feel to the final look. Bold statement pieces will be paired with tailored traditional military garments which will achieve an overall edgy yet clean look. A military collection with a twist.
