The Revitalisation Technique
This spring summer collection is inspired by the architecture of the Quayside, Newcastle. I have researched the shapes and strong silhouettes that are generated from the remarkable modern Sage Gateshead, Tyne Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in depth. The inspiration will be represented through manipulation of fabric, being the key focus to create shape, structure and form. This project explores aesthetic territory at the intersection of an old traditional textile technique such as layering cut out fabric. The initial idea for the construction of the technique came from the shape of the Sage’s roof as it wraps in organic curves around the structures it contains (similarly to how the manipulation on my garments wrap around the body). I then developed the technique further and experimented with this manipulation technique, exploring how it can evolve through different shape, colour, weight and fabrics meaning every garment will show a story throughout the manufacturing, making each one distinctive. The purpose of building the Quayside was to revitalize the area of the city, thus - leading me to trademark my manipulation method the ‘Revitalisation Technique’, as it was an old traditional technique that I hope to bring back to life in a new, unique and creative way.
The colour palette is influenced by the mirrored reflection of different lights glaring onto the steel architecture of the Sage, the entire effect is a graceful, undulating mass reflecting the sky.
