WOVEN IDENTITY
This is a Spring Summer 2023 collection inspired by the traditional Filipiniana gowns from the Philippines and the mixed heritage of my muse, as well as my personal Filipino heritage and British upbringing. Woven identity celebrates the two cultures by combining Filipino silhouettes and art forms such as weaving and embroidery with Western silhouettes and garments.
A mix of different fabrics such as lace, Filipino pineapple fibre, and textured cottons also represent the mix of identity. The inclusion of delicate, sheer fabrics was inspired by the fabrics and techniques used for the feminine Filipiniana clothing and the menswear Barong Tagalog. The collection aims to promote a new modern Filipina feminine ideal; opposite from the traditional
Maria Clara archetype by being confident and bold, but similar in its delicate femininity. Overall, the common thread across my three projects is the power behind femininity and sharing experiences of Filipinos from different time periods all over the world.
